Manitoba Swine Industry Targets Strengthened Relations with US Pork Industry Partners
Karl Kynoch - Canadian Pork Council Traceability and Zoning Committee
Farmscape for November 4, 2004 (Episode 1638) The Chair of Manitoba Pork Council says a key priority of the new Pork Industry Trade Task Team will be to strengthen the working relationship between Canadian and US hog producers. Last week the Manitoba government responded to new US antidumping duties on live Canadian swine by announcing the creation of a pork industry trade task team. Manitoba Pork Council Chair Karl Kynoch says the industry remains confident those duties will be eliminated when the US International Trade Commission rules on injury in April but it's necessary to prepare for all potential outcomes and to take the steps to avoid future conflicts. Clip-Karl Kynoch-Manitoba Pork Council Over the next six months some of the things we want to look at is the potential if we lose this case in April, what is going to be the long term impact on our industry. We need to enhance our industry's value added so, does that mean attracting another packing plant or expanding processing, what ever? There are some other things that will be a benefit working with government. We have issues we feel are very unfair in the trade laws. This way our provincial government can address the federal government and we can get some of the issues dealt with at the WTO level. One of the big things that we need to look at is, we need to build relationships with our neighbors to the south. A lot of the live hog exports out of Manitoba go into Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota. We've made it an agenda item at Pork Council and we'll be working with government to build on those relationships. When I talk to the Americans, our trading partners in the south, they say their producers have a lot of questions. They wonder what's going on in Canada with subsidies and countervails. We've already made commitments to them that if they want some answers call us. We'll make sure we're down there to present. On the government side, they need to be talking to the government and industry in the US. Kynoch says, although the Canadian industry is considering worst case scenarios, it remains confident in the strength of its case. He says, if the duties are eliminated, steps are still needed to prevent similar future conflicts.
