The Chair of Swine Innovation Porc says, to remain responsive to industry needs, it's important to regularly update research priorities.
Swine Innovation Porc will host National Research Priorities Workshops in Ottawa June 7 and in Winnipeg June 21, to gather stakeholder input as it sets research priorities for the next agricultural policy framework.
The research is funded by the federal government augmented by funding collected by the provincial pork organizations, private funding and potentially a new national levy on imported pork.
Swine Innovation Porc Chair Stewart Cressman says the meetings will allow stakeholders to outline their priorities.

We understand that priority setting is an ongoing process.
Certainly we have opportunities that has been every 5 years to do it in a very deliberate manner for the cluster opportunities, the Ag Policy Framework but we see it as an annual process as well because our hope is that we will be approved for the levy on imported pork and, as a facilitator of research for our provincial pork organizations.
As such we want to make sure that these are updated annually as well and that we are able to address issues that come in from left field that we haven't even contemplated.
To have a research program that has only a 5 year view and can only at the front end determine what it's priorities are and develop a research program means you have a very unresponsive system.

Cressman says Swine Innovation Porc's goal is to be a nimble reactive organization that can understand the priorities, be able to communicate those priorities to the research community and have the research community respond with research programs that will address these problems.
