Importance of Focus on Biosecurity Heightens Entering Fall
Dr. Egan Brockhoff - Canadian Pork Council

Farmscape for August 29, 2016

The Canadian Pork Council says the latest incidents involving PED serve as a reminder of the importance of keeping biosecurity on point as we enter the fall.
The Canada-West Swine Health Intelligence Network second quarter report indicates western Canada's swine herd is generally healthy but Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea remains a significant concern.
Dr. Egan Brockhoff, the Veterinary Counsel with the Canadian Pork Council, notes we had three herds in Manitoba break this spring.

Clip-Dr. Egan Brockhoff-Canadian Pork Council:
Those herds have all been contained.
Investigations have really been completed and those herds are moving toward negative status and so that's great news.
We've recently had a PED positive trailer found in Alberta and that reminds everyone that PED does move through transport and that it's extremely important that you pay attention to your transport biosecurity to ensure you're not putting your barn at risk.
With the warm dry weather it's very easy to get a little bit complacent with this virus and how it moves.
This virus loves cool moist days with a little bit of cloud cover and as we come into the fall we're going to have some long warm days but then after that we're going to get into these early winter days where the temperature starts dropping.
The hours of sunlight start dropping and we're going to see a little moisture start to accumulate and so we're moving into PED season again as we come into the fall.
Biosecurity is again going to be king and so ensuring people entering your barn are coming in in the proper Danish entry method, ensuring the transports coming to your sites have been washed, disinfected and thermally assist dried ideally.
Those are the key factors that we really have to consider as we move into this fall.

Dr. Brockhoff says these latest cases on farm and in trailers remind us of just how important it is to keep our biosecurity on point.
