Precision Feeding Technology Offers Opportunity to Maximise Use of Co-Products
Dr. Candido Pomar - Agriculture and Agrifood Canada

Farmscape for October 7, 2016

An Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Scientist says the development of a precision feeding system, which customizes diets for each pig, offers the opportunity to maximize the use of extremely low cost feed ingredients.
As part of research being conducted on behalf of Swine Innovation Porc scientists are developing a precision feeding system which mixes a nutrient dense ration with a ration that is very low in nutrients to tailor the diet to match the nutritional requirements of each individual pig.
Dr. Candido Pomar, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at Sherbrook, says, it's the low nutrient ration that offers the greatest opportunity.

Clip-Dr. Candido Pomar-Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:
The first diet is the highly concentrated diet.
That is not too far from what the industry is doing actually but the second diet is the diet that is very low in nutrients.
The industry is not used to making these so low concentrated diets so we are working on it with a group of scientists to see how we can formulate these diets at the lowest cost.
That is very interesting because I think that our ability to formulate very low concentrated diets is what is going to give us the best opportunity to reduce nutrient intake, nutrient excretion and cost.
This technology will offer us the opportunity to use much more co-products by the swine industry.
We need to formulate diets, one of the diets has to be very low in nutrients so it's a good opportunity I think for the industry to use these co-products to reduce nutrient concentration and cost, which is the essential element here.

Dr. Pomar says the industry can formulate these diets as it does today and can find other ingredients to further reduce feeding costs.
