E-Commerce Influences the Entire Pork Value Chain
Michael McCain - Maple Leaf Foods
Farm-Scape for June 6, 2000 (Episode 444) The President and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods says the growth of e-commerce is having a significant influence on the entire pork value chain. Michael McCain says, with information flowing at the speed of light, customers in Indonesia can access world pork market prices as quick as it takes to push the enter button on a laptop computer. He says e-business is evolving at a huge rate and the one thing for sure is tomorrow will be different from today. He says what will change and how is unsure but it will be different. Clip-Michael McCain-Maple Leaf We see this world unfolding so quickly that there are both opportunities and threats presenting themselves every day. This is an every day industry when you get in to evaluating what e-commerce is going to do to your business. It's something that changes and can evolve every day so we turn on our information networks everyday with a view as to what could be out there today that might either be a new opportunity or a new significant threat. We've found that the information technology is now near instantaneous. The speed of communication back and forth in the organization is almost instantaneous. Maple Leaf has invested over 45 million dollars just in the last five years in our information systems. E-procurement is opening up a whole range of new supply opportunities. We have an e-procurement team that's in place today looking at how we're going to enter the global supply arena where we might buy goods and services in things like plant maintenance, for example, plant maintenance supplies through an e-procurement network actually on a global arena. McCain says one key concern for the pork industry is that the whole new economy is drawing huge numbers of talented people out of conventional businesses and into e-business. He says part of Maple Leaf's core strategy is to attract and train top talent so retaining those best of breed people in the food industry as opposed to e-commerce presents challenges. For Farm-Scape...I'm Bruce Cochrane.
