Antimicrobial Use Reduction Possible in the Swine Sector
Dr. Christian Klopfenstein - CDPQ

Farmscape for January 29, 2019

A Swine Extension Expert with CDPQ, says by knowing why antibiotic is necessary, it will be easier for livestock producers to reduce their use.
As of December 1st antibiotics sold in Canada for use in livestock and poultry production require a veterinary prescription and antibiotics can no longer be used for growth promotion.
"Antibiotic use in Canada: How are we doing?" was discussed as part of a Swine Innovation Porc session held earlier this month in conjunction with the 2019 Banff Pork Seminar.
Dr. Christian Klopfenstein, a Swine Extension Expert with CDPQ, says effective diagnostics will make it easier for farmers to know why an antibiotic is being used and whether it's necessary.

Clip-Dr. Christian Klopfenstein-CDPQ:
The idea behind diagnostics  is just to make sure that every antibiotic used at the farm level has a justification and if the justification is not clear then maybe you should ask the veterinarian and go through and do better diagnostics.
Maybe you need it and it's OK, then you continue to use it but you know exactly why you are using it.
Antimicrobials are used at the farm level but it's not always clear exactly why they are used.
It needs to be reminded that the justification for antimicrobial use is the responsibility of the farmer who is supposed to know exactly why he is using that antibiotic.
This has to be very clear for every antibiotic, why is it used?
The farmer has to know, has to be clear, not just a habit and we've been doing this for the last 10 years.

Dr. Klopfenstein believes we can easily reduce the use of antimicrobials in the swine sector in Canada by changing the way we are using them so we need to have better documentation and improved transparency in the use of these products.
However, he says, what is being done still represents high quality work at the farm level.
