USDA-APHIS International Traveller Campaign Encourages the Public to Join the Effort to Guard Against Foreign Animal Disease
Dr. Paul Sundberg - Swine Health Information Center

The Swine Health Information Center is applauding the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s campaign to recruit the public into the effort to guard against foreign animal disease.
In response to the detection of African Swine Fever in the Caribbean in 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has introduced a series of initiatives to protect U.S. swine from foreign animal disease.
Dr. Paul Sundberg, the Executive Director of the Swine Health Information Center and a member of the Swine Innovation Porc Coordinated African Swine Fever Research Working Group, says the International Traveller Campaign focuses on awareness in international airports.

Clip-Dr. Paul Sundberg-Swine Health Information Center:
We've long been working with USDA and Customs and Border Protection about entry of people into the U.S. through airports and the need for their awareness of the rules, regulations, laws and simple need to keep pork products from being introduced into the U.S.
African Swine Fever is not an issue for food safety for people but if a pork sandwich, just a simple pork sandwich for example, comes from a pig that has African Swine Fever and it's imported into the U.S. if that sandwich gets into contact with a pig and the pig will eat it, we will have African Swine Fever here.
So, the international Traveller Campaign that's going on in 10 international airports across the country and also in Puerto Rico focuses on the awareness of those travellers of the importance of them complying with these regulations and helping to protect the U.S. pork industry.

Dr. Sundberg says the signage and digital and social media advertising warns of the dangers posed by pork that may harbor African Swine Fever and encourages travellers to not bring prohibited pork products into the U.S.
